Crotale du temple, 2018

Jean-Marie Appriou
Cast aluminium
36 x 215 x 120 cm

THE ARTWORK

Whether it goes by the name Crotale du temple, Python à lèvres blanches, Stalagmite, Stalactite or Snake 1, the snake, a symbol of primal force, intimate with the energies of the Earth, is a recurring figure in the phantasmagorical world of the sculptor.

It might have left Eden, and undoubtedly the temple of Penang in Malaysia where it usually resides, to come and inhabit new mental landscapes, with its undulating charm, its mystical vibration. And watch over instincts, inner worlds and the intensity of human urges.

THE ARTIST

He chose sculpture at the beginning of his studies at the Beaux-Arts de Rennes fine arts school in 2010.

Large formats appeal to him, likewise the possibility to formalize a world in its entirety. He decided to devote himself to this, progressively bringing to the fore works whose consistency is both headstrong and dreamy, whose symbolic profusion is unheard of. He defines an in-between world in tones of dull, sooty or silver greys, produced primarily in cast aluminium. A technique he became familiar with like one enters into love. In this strange mercury-hued, mineral and calcified daydream, each character, beast or creature, is invested with a role. The story he has in mind evolves with him: there is the beekeeper, the astronaut, the bather, the flute-playing child, the bow woman. In the setting he chooses for them. Wave, forest, row of maize. He invents a theatre, a stage open to all his visions, whether hailing from the films and comics by Alejandro Jodorowsky, the painted faces of the pre-Raphaelites, the Breton crosses from the villages of his childhood, the Nabis, the Gustave Moreau museum, the landscapes by Arnold Böcklin... His visions are numerous, transversal, timeless, animal. They in turn pollinate and contaminate the gaze and the mind. He explains: “When I sculpt a butterfly or a shell, I do so honestly.” His commitment to matter, tangible in the flesh of his production, his ambition to reveal the authenticity of dreams, endow his creations with their distinctive style.
